FOR GUESTS WITH A DOG
We are very happy for you and your dog to enjoy the gardens but you should exercise some caution in view of the proximity of the country lane adjacent to the cottage
Shipton Sports Field is adjacent to Shipton Golf Club which is next to The Frogmill pub - currently undergoing renovations. There is a public footpath going alongside the golf course and dogs are welcome on the sports field-but please use the green bags as needed, as otherwise the cricketers get upset as do our boys who regularly mow the area to enable Shipton Cricket Club to play on the square.
There are sometimes sheep in the fields so dogs do need to be under close control if they are in the fields.
I sometimes think our dogs must know every nearby walk in the county so please do not hesitate to ask where they are!
Suggested Walk 1
There are many excellent walks in and near to Shipton but a very convenient short walk is along The Gloucestershire Way (a public footpath) which you can access just this side of the A40 crossroads. Just walk up the lane towards the traffic lights, then go through the gate before the lights and the footpath (signposted) starts 10 metres on the left. It goes downhill through several gates and along the boundary by the River Coln at The Old Rectory. You can then walk along the footpath on the road past St Mary’s Church back to West Barn Cottage.
Suggested Walk 2
A really lovely (and safe) walk with breathtaking views of the Cotswold hills is along the Brockhampton RUPP (road used as a public path) - in reality it is a gravelled track and not a road in the conventional sense.
Suggested Walk 3
Another excellent walk is around Hampen and Salperton.
Suggested Walk 4
The area at the Kilkenney Viewing site (where the telephone mast is) has car parking facilities and is totally safe as it is enclosed and is literally a few minutes away.
Suggested Walk 5
An excellent (circular) walk is along the Shipton RUPP. Walk or drive through the village and at the electricity sub-station at the end of the lane past The Reading Room, you can park the car on the verge and the footpath goes towards Hampen. Bear right when you come to the road and after a few hundred metres (opposite the Barn) bear right again on the path that goes through the farmyard to where you started your walk. The walk takes about 45-60 minutes and there are stunning views of the surrounding countryside. But please ensure your dog keeps off crops and is under control - especially on the short part of the walk on the road.
There are many suggested and recommended walks in the books, magazines and guides in the Cottage.
